Who We Are

Orchard House Media Ltd are a publishing and design business who specialise in producing membership magazines and beer festival programmes for the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA). Our Director has been involved in helping CAMRA Branches design, publish and print branch magazines, newsletters and festival guides for 15 years. Having been involved with the Peterborough Branch from his late teens, he has a solid grounding in the ethics and ethos of CAMRA and understands the importance of creating a commercial product whilst holding true to the important campaigning purpose of these magazines.

Our Goal

Our goal is to provide a professional service and well presented end products to enhance a CAMRA branches ability to campaign. As CAMRA is an organisation which runs on it's passionate volunteers, it is not easy to find the time to produce a magazine or festival programme which has the design and print quality to stand next to other professional magazines and event guides. We fulfil a CAMRA branches needs by taking on all the scheduling, print sourcing, design, proof reading and advertising sales so the finished product is delivered on time, to a high quality and most importantly with no charge to the branch.

Free?! Whats the Catch?

We require up to 45% of the magazine to sell to advertisers, that's it in a nutshell! We will approach local pubs and breweries and help them to create effective adverts to draw customers to their events and products. We also have strong links with major national and regional brewers plus many other business in the on and off trade sector who aim to advertise to your target market. Our sales team are fully aware of CAMRA policy and guidelines so only acceptable businesses are approached, and we have a zero tolerance of pressure sales techniques preferring to build sustainable and long term relationships with our advertisers.

How it works

We Meet up

First thing to do is have a talk on the phone, or even better, have a face to face meeting either at a venue near you or at our offices. Here we can find out your exact requirements for the size, print run and style of your magazine. This is also a great opportunity for you to ask us any questions or concerns you may have.

From this meeting we would work out the costings to publish you magazine free of charge to the branch and have a look at the potential advertising we believe we can get. If there is the advertising potential to support your magazine then we would discuss with you a production schedule and timelines.

Design & Editorial

We have designers on hand to produce your pages from editorial supplied from your branch contributors and campaigning articles from CAMRA HQ. We have stock photography to use in your articles if you are short on pictures and we have roving photographers who can be commissioned for images if budget allows. As we work with many CAMRA Branches we have lots of interesting articles which can be shared across publications and we hold all the current campaigning adverts from HQ and membership forms on file.

Once the pages are designed we would send you a PDF for checking via email. You can then make any changes or alterations required either on the phone, in person at our office or via email.

Advertising

Our experienced and polite sales team would start to sell advertising in your magazine to local pubs and businesses at least a month before publication. All we ask of you is a distribution list or pub database if you have one available so we have something to start with. Our advertising rates are very competitive as we understand many pubs are under pressure and we aim to provide a cost effective way to promote their business.

All of the advertisers are offered a free design service so they can take full advantage of the space booked and get maximum effect for their money.

Print and delivery

As per the agreed schedule, the magazine pages will be sent to the printers after all corrections have been made and approved by your branch contact. The magazines are printed on glossy 120gsm paper in full colour CMYK Litho, packaged in boxes and then delivered to one address of your choice.

At the same time as the magazine is being printed, we will prepare and upload a digital copy to issuu.com and supply a web-ready PDF file for you to put on the branch web site. This digital version will then be promoted through our company web site, Facebook, Linkdin and Twitter.

What services do Orchard House Media provide for CAMRA Branch Magazines?

Orchard House Media Ltd will provide sales staff to sell the advertising required to pay for the magazine, we also provide a full design service which consists of taking your raw editorial files and images and creating pages for the magazine. We sort out all the advertising artwork and design adverts for those that need them.
We also prepare the final pages for print, source the printing of the magazine and arrange delivery. Finally we provide digital PDF versions for use on the web.

Extra services are available if required, these include Photography, Illustration, Copy Proof Reading and Graphic Design for posters and marketing material.

Is your service free of charge to our CAMRA Branch?

The magazine and festival guide service is free to CAMRA Branches. In return we require up to 45% of your magazine to sell to advertisers. We will produce a costing before production which will let us know how many pages we need to sell to make the magazine pay for itself and cover all costs. If this is less that 45% we will let you know. Our service is 100% transparent and we are happy to discuss the financial costs with our branch contacts.

Extra services such as poster design and printing are not covered by our free service but we are very competitive and our design quality speaks for itself.

Who has editorial control?

Editorial control remains with the CAMRA branch. We never use 'advertorials' as we believe very strongly that to be taken seriously as a publication you must be perceived as being unbiased. Sometimes we get sent information or news from pubs and breweries, this is always forwarded to the respective CAMRA Branch contacts who decide whether the content is worthy of publication.

Do we need a Contract between our branch and Orchard House Media Ltd to use your service?

A verbal contract is required. We ask that any new CAMRA branch using our service contracts Orchard House Media for a minimum term of one year. This is the amount of time it takes to really get a feel for the local area and bring a magazine up to its potential. After 12 months we like to arrange a meeting and discuss how everything is going, if your branch is happy we would continue on a rolling 12 month contract. If at any point during the 12 month contract the CAMRA branch decides to stop outsourcing the magazine, we require four months or two issues notice, whichever is appropriate.

What advertisers do you approach?

Our first port of call is pubs and clubs in your branch area which stock real ale and cider. We also approach local and national breweries, real ale stockists and online shops.
We follow CAMRA guidelines and current campaigning ethos, this includes not approaching breweries and pub companies with aggressive takeover policies.

What time frames do you need to produce and print a magazine / festival guide?

We can turn a magazine around from the supply of raw editorial files to delivery in 10 days. For larger publications we require 2-3 weeks. A production schedule will be discussed and agreed so all parties are aware of deadlines.

Can you use a local printer?

We work with specific printers who have a proven track record for quality, competitive pricing and have an excellent delivery record. We have tried in the past to use printers local to the CAMRA Branch but with mixed results. Where possible we would be happy to look into working with a local printer but if they do not meet our strict quality policy we will not be able to use them.
